- Story Text: A unique collection of over 400 pieces of art depicting Africa's first World Cup is being exhibited in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This is the first time in FIFA's 80-year World Cup history that an art exhibition of this scale has been recognised as official licensed products. All of the original works at the exhibition will be auctioned in July. The pieces will cost from about 1,500 US dollars to possibly over 200,000 US dollars.
Some of the highlights of the 2010 Fine Art Collection include a series titled 'Africa Salutes You,' -- 32 paintings representing the flags of participating nations. Each of the paintings is signed by former South Africa president, Nelson Mandela.
Also on display is the 'Art of Pele' collection, a series of six pieces produced by Brazilian football legend Pele in collaboration with South African artist Athol Moult.
Craig Mark, the Project Director of the 2010 Fine Art Collection, spoke about Pele's involvement in the work.
"He worked with Athol Moult as well in Brazil and they put together these wonderful works which tell the story about Pele's life. It gives the public an opportunity to purchase art work created by possibly the best soccer player that has ever lived," said Mark.
Apart from the Pele and Mandela works, the 2010 Fine Art project also features two other collections: the '2010 International Fine Art' and the '2010 African Fine Art'.
At least 160 international artists, five from each participating country contributed their work.
From the continent, 160 other works are on display as part of the 2010 African Fine Art Collection. Organisers say the exhibition is a great platform to promote African art.
"During the World Cup, there are four billion people from all over the world focused on South Africa and Africa," said Mark. "It's a brilliant opportunity for us to promote the art industry in Africa, the African art industry and art has a very natural association with sports. Sports is part of our lives as Africans and so is art, a very important part or mirror of our society and our daily lives of which sports obviously plays a very important part."
The exhibition is open to the public daily until the start of the auction on July 4. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
