- Story Text: After walking out for several hours on Monday representatives of the Africa group of countries said on Tuesday (December 15) they were cautiously optimistic about the two tier climate negotiations in Copenhagen.
Talks at the 15th United Nations (UN) Climate Conference in Copenhagen (COP15) came to a halt when a number of African countries walked out in frustration.
The main session of the talks was suspended following protests led by the group of African nations which accused developed countries of trying to dismiss the Kyoto Protocol. But on Tuesday the African group was more optimistic.
"So yesterday we decided with the President what there ought to be and that we will come out with two agreements. But now, in the next two or three days, we'll see what happens," Cherif Rahmani, Algerian Environment Minister, told a Copenhagen news conference on Tuesday.
