- Story Text: Thousands of students run riot after South African hip hop star accused of murdering four teenagers in drag racing accident is granted bail.
Student protesters at the trial of a young South African hip hip star, Jub Jub charged with the murder of four teenagers reacted violently after he was granted bail on Friday (March 19). Bail was set at 10,000rands (1360 US dollars).
The protesters threw stones at the police and vandalised vehicles outside the court house with some vowing to kill Jub Jub.
"This is anger for us, all of us, okay it's fine, enough is enough. This thing is not right, how can they give Jub Jub bail," said an unidentified student leader.
Jub Jub whose real name is Molemo Maarohanye was involved in a car crash on Monday (March 8) which claimed the lives of four teenagers and critically injured two others.
Media reports say, Jub Jub and his associate Themba Tshabalala were allegedly drag racing on a two-way road, with one of their cars driving in the wrong lane towards oncoming traffic.
Jub Jub and Tshabalala are facing four charges of murder, two of attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence. On Wednesday (March 17), the court heard that the two were high on cocaine and morphine. Police conducted tests after they arrested them.
The trial has been scheduled for April 7. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
