  • Story Text: Glenn Agliotti, a businessman and friend of South Africa's police commissioner, Jackie Selebi, goes on trial for alleged drug trafficking.
    Glenn Agliotti appeared in court on Tuesday (October 9) to stand trial for alleged involvement in an international criminal syndicate.
    The businessman and associate of South Africa's Police Commissioner, Jackie Selebi, has been charged with drug trafficking in connection with a 250 million rand (35 million U.S. dolllars) drug bust.
    Selebi, who is also president of the international police organisation Interpol, has denied allegations of links with organised crime. He says he is ready to defend himself in court.
    South Africa's Sunday Times reported that a warrant had been issued for Selebi on charges including racketeering and corruption, allegedly related to his friendship with Agliotti.
    Agliotti is accused of participating in mining magnate Brett Kebble's murder in 2005. Selebi says he has no financial links or knowledge of Agliotti's alleged underworld connections.
    A court decided on Friday (October 5) to delay setting a trial date for Agliotti, who denies any wrongdoing.
    Agliotti appeared with three co-accused; Stephanos Paparas, his father Dimitrio and Stanley Poonin. He is due back in court on the 4th of November.
