- Story Text: International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge arrived in Durban, South Africa on Monday (July 4) for the vote on which city will host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
Munich in Germany, South Korea's Pyeongchang and the French city of Annecy are the three contestestants. Each will make a presentation to IOC members on Wednesday ahead of the ballot.
Annecy is the outsider, having had a troubled campaign. Former chief executive Edgar Grospiron quit last December complaining of a lack of funds.
Pyeongchang bid unsuccessfully for the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. If it wins Wednesday's IOC vote it would become the first Asian city outside Japan to host the Winter Games.
Munich hopes to become the first city to stage both the Summer and Winter Olympics, having hosted the games in 1972. The city is promoting its games as sustainable and ecological.
Rogge told a news conference on Monday: "The IOC is delighted to come for a second time here in this really beautiful city. We are going to have a very important meeting which of course, first of all, is for the host city for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, but also other matters on the agenda are very important, such as the preparation of the upcoming Games." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
