- Story Text: Engalnd captain says Wayne Rooney is possibly the best player in the world while coach Fabio Capello keeps his goalkeeper selection private for Friday's World Cup match against Algeria.
England underwent their final training session in Cape Town, South Africa on Thursday (June 17) before taking on Algeria in their second Group C match on Friday (June 18).
England come into the match after an opening 1-1 draw against the United States last Saturday (June 12). England's goalscorer was captain Steven Gerrard after just four minutes, before goalkeeper Robert Green fumbled Clint Dempsey's tame shot to give the Americans a draw.
Striker Wayne Rooney, one of the players expected to feature in the England team, had a relatively quiet game against the Americans and has not scored for his country since England's 5-1 win over Croatia last September.
Rooney has, however, had an excellent season for Manchester United, and Gerrard fully expects the 24-year-old to shine at the World Cup.
"I'm sure it's only a matter of time before Wayne finds the back of the net. Everybody saw how great his form is again. This season he's been the best player in the world, or at least one of them, certainly. He's on a return to form and it's only a matter of time before we see that in this World Cup," said Gerrard.
One problem for coach Capello has been his goalkeeper selection after Green's error last week. He also has veteran David James and Joe Hart available for selection, but he remained tight-lipped on Thursday about his choice for the Algeria match.
"I have decided, but we have to wait until tomorrow," he said.
When asked if he had told the players, he added:
"No, no. Tomorrow. Always the day of the game, never the day before." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
