- Story Text: ACT Brumbies lock Shawn Mackay of Australia was placed in a medically induced coma after he was hit by a motor vehicle in South Africa, the Australian Super 14 team said on Monday (March 30).
Mackay suffered spinal injuries as well as a broken leg after he was struck by an armoured response vehicle in Durban in the early hours of Sunday morning (March 29).
Brumbies spokesperson Rob McCoid said 26-year-old Mackay was in a serious but stable condition and had been placed in a coma while he awaited further surgery over the next two days.
"Shawn was struck by a vehicle as he was crossing the road in the early hours of this morning. From what we understand that vehicle was a security, armed response vehicle," McCoid said.
"His current condition from what we understand through the hospital is that he is in a critical but stable condition. He has suffered multiple injuries, including a fracture to the spine and dislocation, a compound fracture to his left leg as well as multiple facial fractures."
Mackay was recruited by the Brumbies this season after spending the past five years playing rugby league in Sydney.
He was selected as a reserve for the Brumbies match against the Sharks on Saturday (March 28) but came off the bench to play in his team's 35-14 loss. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
