- Summary: JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (JUNE 19, 2010) (REUTERS) (*** FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY ***) WIDE OF INTERVIEW (SOUNDBITE) (English) ROSETTE KAYUMBA, WIFE OF EXILED RWANDAN GENERAL LIEUTENANT-GENERAL FAUSTIN KAYUMBA NYAMWASA, SAYING: "He spoke to my driver, but he wanted space to be able to shoot my husband. Then when my husband bent, he shot. And fortunately, it went into the stomach and not in the head. And then he passed by, wanted probably to get to the other side and shoot him in the head. Then my husband got out immediately. He got worried because he wanted to come and shoot me because I was just behind, next to him. And he grabbed the gun. In that kind of scuffle, the guy couldn't cock the gun." CUTAWAY (SOUNDBITE) (English) ROSETTE KAYUMBA, WIFE OF EXILED RWANDAN GENERAL LIEUTENANT-GENERAL FAUSTIN KAYUMBA NYAMWASA, SAYING: "Actually our President Kagame said it in the parliament that he will actually kill my husband. That wherever he is he will follow him and kill him. This is like, this is not an isolated case because I guess this guy has nothing to do with my husband." CUTAWAY - TALKING TO JOURNALISTS (SOUNDBITE) (English) ROSETTE KAYUMBA, WIFE OF EXILED RWANDAN GENERAL LIEUTENANT-GENERAL FAUSTIN KAYUMBA NYAMWASA, SAYING: "After 15 years, 16 years, after the genocide, and we are being followed, we are being persecuted. It's not enough. You know what - our relatives are going through Kigali, what we've gone through, it's enough. It's not enough for him to leave us in peace and be able to at least provide for our kids. He wants even to kill us." KAYUMBA'S SON SHOWING JACKET WITH BLOOD (SOUNDBITE) (English) ROSETTE KAYUMBA, WIFE OF EXILED RWANDAN GENERAL LIEUTENANT-GENERAL FAUSTIN KAYUMBA NYAMWASA, SAYING: "But Kagame, he's used to kill in that kind of style. He's actually, I'm very sorry to say, he's a serial killer. He enjoys killing. Because really as a parent, he's a president, but he's a parent going beyond and wanting to eliminate Kayumba and kill him. It's really, I don't understand." (SOUNDBITE) (English) PATRICK KAREGEYA, FORMER HEAD OF RWANDA'S MILITARY INTELLIGENCE OFFICE AND HAS BEEN SEEKING ASYLUM IN SOUTH AFRICA FOR LAST TWO YEARS, SAYING: "It's really high-level arrogance that you walk into somebody's country in the middle of the World Cup, everybody's focusing on the World Cup and shoot some dissident general , then of course you guys from the press will turn away from the World Cup and talk about the crime that has been committed so I don't know how you solve political crimes by murder." - Story Text: An exiled Rwandan general was hospitalised after being shot in the stomach in South Africa on Saturday (june 19), his wife said.
Lieutenant-General Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa was in the intensive care unit of a suburban Johannesburg hospital after the shooting, Rosette Kayumba told Reuters Television.
"When my husband bent, he shot. And fortunately, it went into the stomach and not in the head. And then he passed by, wanted probably to get to the other side and shoot him in the head. Then my husband got out immediately. He got worried because he wanted to come and shoot me because I was just behind, next to him. And he grabbed the gun. In that kind of scuffle, the guy couldn't cock the gun," Kayumba said.
Kayumba laid the blame on Rwandan President Paul Kagame who she called a "serial killer."
"But Kagame, he's used to kill in that kind of style. He's actually, I'm very sorry to say, he's a serial killer. He enjoys killing," Kayumba said who was in the car along with their son.
Once a close confident of Kagame, Nyamwasa fled to South Africa this year after falling out with the president, later accusing him of using an anti-corruption campaign to frame opponents.
Analysts have said the flight of Nyamwasa, who fought alongside Kagame to end the 1994 genocide in the central African nation, was another sign of a growing rift between the president and his top aides.
During and after the war to end the genocide, Nyamwasa held a number of key positions, including army chief of staff and head of the country's intelligence services. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
