- Story Text: UEFA President Michel Platini was taken to hospital in Johannesburg on Friday (July 9) night after fainting in a restaurant, UEFA official William Gaillard told Reuters.
Gaillard, who is a special advisor to Platini, said the 55-year-old had fainted before eating in the early evening at the Pigalle restaurant in the suburb of Sandton.
Restaurant manager Johnny Miranda told Reuters: "He arrived with five guests, they settled down and ordered a round of drinks, they hadn't even placed their food order at that point in time. His guests told me that he wasn't feeling too well and he proceeded to say he wanted to go to his hotel room. He got up, he was walking through, he collapsed, he fainted. Fortunately there was a doctor on site exactly where he fainted, so he was taken care of. We went the extra mile and actually called Morningside clinic to bring their 911 people here. My doctor was actually having dinner here at a separate table and went with him to Morningside clinic. The doctor has now come back and told me that he is stabilised and all is fine."
Platini is one of the greatest players in the history of the sport and helped France win the 1984 European Championship. He was national team coach between 1988 and 1992.
He was elected president of European soccer's governing body in 2007. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
