- Story Text: The funeral service for the great-granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, who died in a car crash last Thursday (June 10) on her way home from the World Cup kickoff concert, was underway in Johannesburg on Thursday (June 17).
The funeral for Zenani Mandela, aged 13, was being held in the church at her school, St Stithians College in Lynne Park, Sandton.
A frail looking Nelson Mandela, 91, the much beloved father of post-apartheid South Africa, attended with his third wife, Graca Machel, his daughter, Zindzi, and his granddaughter, Zoleka - Zenani's mother.
Mandela's second wife and Zenani's great-grandmother, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, also attended the service at the packed-out church.
Fellow pupils from St. Stithians College held single white roses and wiped away tears throughout the ceremony and photographs of Zenani with family members were shown on a widescreen in the church.
Her death cast a cloud over South Africa's day of joy in becoming the first African nation to host the World Cup.
Mandela pulled out of his appearance at the opening of the World Cup last Friday (June 11) after hearing the news that Zenani had been killed - two days after her 13th birthday.
Zenani was one of nine great-grandchildren of Mandela.
The driver of the car, a family friend, was arrested and is expected to appear in court after the World Cup ends. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
