We've been talking about this event for a while, since the Ashes finished, everything we did during the one day series in England was based around playing at the Champions Trophy, so we've won the tournament and we're very happy." (SOUNDBITE) (English) RICKY PONTING, AUSTRALIA CRICKET CAPTAIN, SAYING: "We celebrated long and hard, which is probably what you should do when you win an award like we have so, it's a great achievement you now. As I said being the second biggest tournament that you play, for the guys, to get through a disappointing Ashes series and to have a lot of young inexperienced guys achieve something pretty special, the guys celebrated very well." (SOUNDBITE) (English) SHANE WATSON, AUSTRALIAN ALL-ROUNDER, SAYING: "Definitely, especially the last two games, to come out with another victory was brilliant. We've got a different personnel now, a few younger guys coming in so it's a massive achievement for us to play as well as we did in this tournament." (SOUNDBITE) (English) SHANE WATSON, AUSTRALIAN ALL-ROUNDER, SAYING: "Absolutely, you know, as Ricky said we've got about a ten day turn around, so it's a nice and quick little stint at home so it should be a lot of fun as it always is to play in India." Australia cricket team captain Ricky Ponting showed off the team's trophy on Tuesday (October 6) following their victory in the ICC Champions Trophy final.
The Australians became the first side to successfully defend the trophy with a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the final at Supersport Park in Pretoria, South Africa.
Alongside Ponting was Shane Watson, who scored 105 not out to earn the Man-Of-The-Match award for the second successive Champions Trophy final.
Speaking at the press event, Ponting praised the way his side bounced back from losing the Ashes to England to go on to win the following one-day series 6-1 and then follow that with victory in the Champions Trophy.
"We've been on the road for a long time, almost five months, so to come away with the second biggest one day tournament that we play is a great achievement, you know. We've been talking about this event for a while, since the Ashes finished, everything we did during the one day series in England was based around playing at the Champions Trophy, so we've won the tournament and we're very happy," said Ponting.
"To get through a disappointing Ashes series and to have a lot of young inexperienced guys achieve something pretty special, the guys celebrated very well."
Watson, who's century against the Kiwi's followed his undefeated 136 in the semi-final against England, praised the new young players in the Australian side.
"To come out with another victory was brilliant. We've got a different personnel now, a few younger guys coming in so it's a massive achievement for us to play as well as we did in this tournament," he said.
After a short break at home Australia head to India where they play a one-day series which Watson said he was looking forward to.
"We've got about a ten day turn around, so it's a nice and quick little stint at home so it should be a lot of fun as it always is to play in India," he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
