- Story Text: South African President Thabo Mbeki meets with his Mozambican counterpart President Armando Guebuza for the South Africa-Mozambique Heads of State Economic Bilateral Commission.
Mozambican President Armando Guebuza met with South African President Thabo Mbeki both chaired the South African-Mozambique Heads of State Economic Bilateral Meeting in Pretoria today (September 18). The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen bilateral trade and economic relations between the two countries.
At a press conference, led by South African Minister of Trade and Industry Mandisi Mphahlwa and Mozambican Minister of Finance Manuel Chang, a combination of progress reports were given on previous commitments.
Environment and tourism issues were also addressed, including the preparations for the 2010 World Cup.
"On trade and industry related issues we reviewed progress on the implementation of memorandum of understanding of economic operation, and we showed throughout that progress report that in a number of areas in terms of that MOU, we are beginning to see co-operation between our standards organisations, the South Africa Bureau of Standards and it's Mozambican counterpart, we are starting to see co-operation in the area of trade negotiations, the training and capacity building in that area, we are also starting to exchange and share experiences in the area of small to medium enterprise development," said Mphahlwa.
Other areas touched upon by Mphahlwa were that of Minerals and Energy, Finance, Transport and Communications and Immigration. Under Immigration he mentioned that they were in the process of implementing a visa abolition agreement between the two countries. A one-stop border post between South Africa and Mozambique is also being planned.
