- Story Text: South Africa's President Jacob Zuma says thanks to residents of Soweto for supporting the ANC in last month's elections.
South Africa's President Jacob Zuma on Sunday (May 24) thanked the residents of Soweto for voting the ANC into power.
Zuma, accompanied by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, ANC provincial chairman Paul Mashatile and Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo, first laid a wreath at the Hector Pieterson memorial before touring a local shopping mall.
Zuma said he wanted to begin his visit in Soweto because it was the face of South Africa and the home of the ANC.
"And we thought it was important to make it in Soweto, a place that symbolises the sights of struggle," he said to a large crowd outside the mall.
Hector Pieterson, age 13, was one the first students to be killed during the 1976 Student Uprising in Soweto. He has since become a symbol of youth resistance to apartheid.
This uprising started on June 16 as a peaceful protest march organized by school students in Soweto.
67-year-old Zuma, whose party won a landslide victory in elections last month was elected by South Africa's parliament as the country's fourth black President on May 6. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
