- Story Text: Policemen were deployed outside Orlando Stadium in Soweto township on Thursday (June 10) on the eve of the first World Cup on African soil.
Workers queued up to enter the stadium which later on Thursday will be the venue where footballers, local musicians and international singing stars will introduce the acts at a concert which organisers say will draw an even bigger global television audience than Live Earth in 2007.
Soweto is South Africa's biggest township and was home to Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
In nearby Soccer City, where host South Africa will play Mexico on the opening match on Friday (June 11), barricades have been set up with police patrolling the area. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
