- Story Text: Japanese rescue team combs the CTV building in Christchurch looking for survivors and bodies despite fading hopes.
Japanese rescue teams continued to sort through the rubble on Thursday (February 24) in Christchurch at site of what is feared to be the deadliest single collapse.
A contingent of 70 Japanese search and rescue workers arrived in Christchurch early on Thursday morning and headed to a site where several Japanese students are believed to be buried under rubble.
Japanese team members are focusing mainly on the six-storey CTV building where as many as 100 people, including 11 Japanese students, are believed to have been buried.
The team is made up of a medical contingent, a disaster high-tech rescue team with supersonic probes and sniffer dogs. Most of the team members have worked in disasters ranging from the Kobe earthquake in 1995 to the Haiti earthquake in 2010.
Family members of the Japanese language students believed to be stuck under the rubble in the CTV, left on Thursday and are expected to arrive in Auckland early Friday (February 25).
New Zealand declared a national state of emergency to cope with the aftermath of devastating tremour in the country's second biggest city. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
