- Story Text: Japan's top jewelry maker Ginza Tanaka unveiled on Wednesday (April 23) its latest creation-- a Mickey Mouse statue made of pure gold.
The one kilogram gold Mickey Mouse with a clapper board costs about $31,000 U.S. dollars-- relatively cheaper by the jewelry company's standards, which recently used gold in swimsuits, dumbbells and bathtubs.
But the jewelry maker said it has to add a premium to the golden mouse not only because of its popularity but also the effort the Tokyo-based jeweler took to re-create the famous animated character in pure gold.
"It was very difficult to correctly re-create its characteristic facial expression, rounded eyes, rounded foot and delicate contour to make it look like the real Mickey Mouse. But our skilled craftsmen did it successfully," said Noboru Takada, president of Ginza Tanaka.
The statue will not go on sale but be presented to one lucky purchaser of Disney's latest DVD in a lucky-draw in May.
Gold hit a three-week high of 952.60 U.S. dollars an ounce last week, but attempts to stay above the key resistance of 950 U.S. dollar were met by profit taking. Dealers noted demand from jewelers but it was not strong enough to trigger another rally of around 1,000 U.S. dollars an ounce. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
