- Story Text: Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon attends a Japanese tea ceremony, serving green tea for breast cancer survivors in Tokyo.
Clad in a blue Japanese kimono, Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon took part in a traditional tea ceremony in Tokyo Wednesday (June 11) as part of an event aimed at empowering women.
The actress from the movie "Legally Blonde", now serves as a goodwill ambassador to the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and beauty products maker Avon.
She is visiting Japan this week to raise awareness of breast cancer and domestic violence. A study shows only 12 per cent of Japanese women get regular screening for breast cancer.
On Wednesday, Reese invited Japanese breast cancer survivors to a tea ceremony, where she wore blue kimono and made green tea for them in a traditional Japanese way.
Asked whether her kimono was too tight, the 32-year-old actress answered, "No, it reminds me of movies you do with corsets and that sort of thing."
"It's a great honor to be able to wear the traditional clothing and be part of a tea ceremony, especially to honor these people who who have been survivors of breast cancer. It's a very important day," Witherspoon said after chatting with the breast cancer survivors in a Japanese garden.
The Japanese tea ceremony is a multifaceted traditional activity strongly influenced by Zen Buddhism, in which powdered green tea, or matcha, is ceremonially prepared and served to others. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
