- Story Text: Queen of pop Madonna landed in Tokyo on Monday (December 5) ahead of a "secret' live performance this week and after a 12- year absence from Japan.
The U.S. pop star, who is in town to promote her latest chart-topping album "Confessions on a Dancefloor", was given a warm welcome at Narita airport by by hundreds of screaming fans.
Madonna's promoters say she is expected to hold a news conference later this week before her performance which she is doing "secretly" for a local radio station.
"Hung Up" from her latest album has brought her to match Elvis Presley's record of 36 Top 10 hits in the U.S. Billboard charts. She started off with "Holiday" in 1983 and has appeared in the Billboard Hot 100 every year since.
"Confessions on a Dancefloor" has sold nearly 350,000 copies in the week ended November 20, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and ranks as her third-largest sales week in the tracking firm's 14-year history.
The album and single "Hung Up" is also No. 1 on the British charts. The single is on the top-10 of the U.S. charts.
The 47-year old mother of two has recently said she might try her hand at making films.
Madonna last performed in Japan in 1993 as part of her global "Girlie Show" tour.
Some fans however could not forget Madonna's long absence from Japan which they interpret as lack of interest, mocking her with a poster that said just that. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
