- Story Text: The world's "sexiest man" Johnny Depp greeted Japanese fans and reporters on Wednesday (December 9) in Tokyo, talking about his latest movie "Public Enemies" as well as his personal enemy.
"Well... thank you for having me back, first and foremost. Two years is too long to stay away from here. It's always such a beautiful welcoming every time I come to Tokyo, so I'm deeply touched and deeply grateful," Depp told a news conference packed with a several hundred members of the media Depp, named People magazine's "sexiest man alive" for a second time last month joined an elite club of double honorees that includes George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
People magazine described Depp as "the king of cool with the killer cheekbones". Depp, who also took the title in 2003, succeeded 2008 winner Hugh Jackman.
Still, the "sexiest man" admitted he isn't invincible.
"The enemy is... the scariest enemy is within, you know. The scariest enemy is allowing yourself to be limited, allowing yourself to conform to what you're expected to conform to. That's the scariest thing I think going," said Depp, who played captain Jack Sparrow in the blockbuster, 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.
In his latest movie "Public Enemies," Depp stars as the infamous American bank robber John Dillinger with other stars including Christian Bale of "The Dark Knight" and academy-winning French actress Marion Cotillard.
"It was an opportunity for me to salute Dillinger's memory and also in a very strange way to pay tribute to my heritage. I had my grandfather who I was very close with as a kid, who was kind of a special character in Kentucky, and he was one of the guys, you know, just did what he had to do to pay the rent and feed his kids," Depp told the news conference.
The film was directed by Michael Mann, who's well-known for hits such as "Heat" in 1995 and "Hancock" in 2008.
The gangster drama weighted on weaving historical reality into fiction by conducting filming at the actual location of a 1934 gun fight between Dillinger and the FBI, the Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin.
The film will hit theatres across Japan on Saturday (December 12). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
