- Story Text: NTT DoCoMo unveils a prototype mobile phone it says is targeted for the weight-conscious.
Eaten too many garlic potato chips? Or just feeling under the weather? Your phone may soon be able to tell those things by measuring your body fat levels, heartbeat and even your breath stench.
Japan's largest mobile phone carrier NTT DoCoMo unveiled on Tuesday (October 2) a prototype "Fitness Phone" that can measure all the above and more at a high tech expo near Tokyo.
The mobile phone is equipped with various of functions designed to help you stay fit, with built-in pedometer counting the steps you take while other devices measure burnt calories, heart pulse, body fat and even your level of "bad breath."
Punch in your height, weight, gender and age, and the handheld phone reads pulse and your level of fitness while doing the math on proper calorie intake after calculating daily activity .
Many are interested in the new feature.
"As I'm over 40 years old, I'm interested in how to keep fit. At first, I was doubtful a cell phone could help, but now that I've seen it, I believe it can," said 42-year-old businessman Hiroshi Yukawa after trying out the fitness phone.
A spokesman for Japan's leading mobile player says the weight-conscious are its target consumers.
"Anybody trying to stay healthy could use this phone, but our primary target groups would be fat-fighting middle-aged businessmen and young women on diets," said Kentaro Endo, a spokesman for NTT DoCoMo.
Other bells and whistle on the yet unpriced phone may include GPS tracking and a music player for workouts, while an alcohol-breathalyzer may be in the works. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
