- Story Text: Hollywood superstar Julia Roberts arrived in Japan on Tuesday (August 17) ahead of the Japanese premiere of her new film, 'Eat Pray Love'.
The film, based on the best-selling novel by Elizabeth Gilbert, tells the true story of Liz, a thirty-two-year-old who has everything a modern woman could desire but finds herself stuck in an unhappy marriage.
In order to turn her life around she decides to divorce her husband and travel the world for a year in search of happiness and true balance in her life.
Playing the role of Liz, Roberts traveled to Italy, India and Bali.
The actress reportedly gained 10 pounds whilst filming in Europe, declaring in one scene it was her 'no carb left behind experiment'.
It is the film star's first visit to Japan, where local media have speculated that Roberts never visited in all these years because she was not fond of Japan.
Thus while Japanese media turned up in force at Narita airport on Tuesday and despite advance coverage of her arrival, the throngs of fans that usually accompany major stars' arrivals in Japan were not present.
The few that were around, some by coincidence, were nevertheless delighted to catch a brief glimpse of her as she passed by in front of the banks of local television cameras.
"She was so cute!" said Takako Ogawa, a 53-year-old returning from her holidays told Reuters.
"She was smaller than I thought and looked serene. My image of her from the movie was comedic and active but she seemed sophisticated and pretty," added Naomi Ogawara, another Tokyo resident returning from their summer holidays abroad.
Some just hoped that if the media speculation was true this visit will make Roberts change her mind.
"I want her to like Japan as there are many parts of Japan that are beautiful," said 66-year old Tokyo resident Noriko Usui.
Roberts will attend the Japan premier of the movie 'Eat Pray Love' , based on the bestseller which has sold some eight million copies since 2006, on Thursday (August 19).
