- Story Text: U2 singer Bono receives honorary doctor of law degree from one of Keio University, one of the country's top.
Irish rock band U2's lead singer Bono was presented an honorary doctoral degree by Japan's top public university on Tuesday (May 27) to mark his contribution to not only music but humanitarian assistance.
The man, who is known for his humanitarian and philanthropic work, received a Doctor of Law degree from the University in a ceremony where he also received applause from the Keio university students.
"The president Anzai allowed an Irish rock star, outlaw, to become a honorary doctorate in-law. It is funny," Bono said, refering to the university head, at a speech to students after the ceremony.
"I pretended I was student at Trinity college in Dublin because when I was in this little post-punk rock group, I could eat in the Buttery free of charge if I told them I was a student. So I have to tell you this doctor of law has been breaking the law in his time in college," he added jokingly. The Buttery is a restaurant at Trinity College in Dublin.
Bono is in Japan to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) which begins Wednesday (May 28), with some officilas from 52 African states attending to discuss poverty, conflict, the food crisis and disease in the continent.
Bono also stressed that developed nations especially host nation of this year's summit meetings, Japan, should work harder to reduce global poverty.
"On global health, we haven't had a great start. Your government announced last week that its new commitment on global fund, the mechanism you just saw work there. We were disappointed. The announcement was neither clear nor ambitious enough given the scale of the disease. We hope this will be fixed in a next few weeks," he said referring to the Japan's measures to fight global poverty, adding that the global health and food problem should be the top agenda of this year's summit meeting.
Tokyo plans to announce a package of steps for Africa, including doubling its official development assistance and investment over the next five years. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
