- Story Text: Exactly one month after Japan's massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake and the tsunami that followed, police searching for bodies inside the nuclear exclusion zone held a moment of silence on Monday (April 11) to remember the victims.
The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has a 20-km (12-mile) exclusion ring from which people were forced to evacuate and those who live in a 10-km (6-mile) zone beyond that have been encouraged to leave or to stay indoors.
As such, the search for bodies inside the exclusion zone has only recently begun and police still wear protective suits while conducting the searches for the missing in the mud-coated rice fields and devastated houses.
Police stopped work at exactly 2:46JST (0546GMT) to mark one month since the disaster that left at least 28,000 people dead or missing.
Fukushima Daiichi plant owner TEPCO is struggling to contain the worst atomic crisis since Chernobyl.
Efforts to regain control of six reactors hit by the 15-metre (49 feet) high tsunami, which caused partial meltdowns to some reactor cores after fuel rods were overheated, has been hindered by 60,000 tonnes of radioactive water. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
