- Story Text: Russia's Bolshoi welcomed a leading Japanese ballet troupe onto the stage of its 'Maly' Theatre last week (Thursday, September 17), staging a production with Russian and Japanese soloists.
Warming up for the production of 'la Dame aux Camellias", dancers practised routines backstage, among them Japanese ballerina Jun Ariguchi and Russia's prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova.
'La Dame aux Camellias' is a production of Japan's national ballet company , the 'New National Theatre', under artistic director Asami Maki.
Svetlana Zakharova took the lead role on stage for some scenes, while Jun Ariguchi danced other scenes with her partner Rudi Yamamoto.
"Today we will show much ballet has developed in Japan, in every small town there is a ballet school, they love ballet there. The Japanese (New National ) Theatre has come here and it's a big event, it's the result of a lot of work, it's the result of more than a year and a half's effort to bring the Theatre here on tour", said Zakharova, speaking before the performance.
The Japanese dancers paid tribute to the Russian ballet tradition.
"It's a big honour for us to dance on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre and we are grateful to them for giving us the opportunity," said Jun Ariguchi, adding: "The ballet staged by Asami Maki is very beautiful and emotional and we would like to convey the mood and beauty of this ballet to the Russian audience. We have been rehearsing for quite some time on the stage of this theatre and we hope we'll achieve this."
New National Theatre's male soloist Rudi Yamamoto was keen to impress the Russian ballet audience.
"We are glad to be dancing on the stage of the world famous Bolshoi Theatre and we'll do our best to give the Russian audience a ballet they will love," he said.
Japan's New National Theatre is the leading national ballet company, founded in 1997.
It is housed in a new theatre in Tokyo, renowned for its cutting-edge architectural design.
Like the Bolshoi, it combines an opera and ballet repertoire.
The New National Theatre ballet repertoire includes classical ballets, such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, The Swan Lake and others, though it has an strong reputation in contemporary dance. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
