- Story Text: South Korea urged Japan on Thursday (July 14) to withdraw its measures against South Korea's flagship carrier Korean Air over disputed islets.
Seoul's Yonhap News agency reported on Thursday that Japan's foreign ministry had instructed its officials to refrain from taking Korean Air flights for one month from Monday (July 11) in protest at the airline's flight by its first Airbus A380 last month near the disputed islets (Dokdo in Korean and Takeshima in Japanese).
"They should take into consideration that the measure would influence both countries' relations. We urge the Japanese side to take the situation seriously, not to take that kind of measure again," Seoul's Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho Byung-jae told a news briefing.
Japan and South Korea have a long-simmering feud over a set of desolate islands located about the same distance from both countries. South Korean sympathy for Japan after the earthquake and tsunami in March turned to anger when a Japanese education panel authorised the publication of school textbooks that assert Japan's claim to the islands.
