- Story Text: Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra looked to sell Thailand's recovery from last year's floods during her trip to Japan on Wednesday (March 7) as she met both business leaders and government officials.
Addressing business leaders from Japan's Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Yingluck emphasised her country's recovery from the floods that so crippled the country last year and especially hit Japanese manufacturers.
"It is important to speed up reinforcement to measure and structure to prevent floods in this short period and in the longer terms. In the meantime the government is committed to reinforce the environment in favour of investment and helping operators to become competitive, to bring Thai's economy back with strength onto the world's economic stage," Yingluck told a gathering of around 200 business people from both Thailand and Japan.
At one point last year, the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) said that at least 300 Japanese companies were affected by the flooding Yingluck also held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda where they also discussed the impact of the floods and how the country is working to recover from it.
"We talked how the Thai government's policies to recover from the floods have shown results and renewed our resolve to continue our close co-operation between our two countries," Noda said.
Yingluck also discussed Thai approval for compensation for those killed in the unrest in 2010, including that of Japanese Reuters cameraman Hiroyuki Muramoto.
As part of her four-day trip, Yingluck will visit on Thursday (March 8) some of the areas that were destroyed by Japan's massive tsunami last year, before she leaves on Friday (March 9). - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
