- Story Text: On the anniversary of Japan's quake, tsunami and nuclear disasters, Cyndi Lauper was back in Tokyo on Sunday (March 11).
But it wasn't just for fun.
While most foreign stars cancelled performances and left the country following the country's triple disasters, Lauper showed her true colours and stayed in town.
The American pop veteran told a news conference she was now back in Japan for a series of concerts to raise money for those affected.
"I stayed becasue I have such a connection with you guys I wouldn't think of not staying and I came back because I want the people who were afflicted to know that they are not forgotten," Lauper said.
"Singing together will help everyone just feel a little better, get a little 'ganbatte', to continue the battle to rebuild and to celebrate renewal," she added, using the Japanese word for "to soldier on".
Lauper toured Japan's tsunami ravaged north-east coast after arriving in Japan on March 2, visiting areas struggling to rebuild after the disaster.
"Emotionally people are hurting. So, you know, hugs, sending love and bringing everbody together and singing together," she said.
Lauper is performing at venues in Japan until March 15. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
