- Story Text: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met his Japanese counterpart in Tokyo on Saturday (January 28).
Lavrov and Koichiro Gemba held talks and are expected to discuss the long-running territorial disputes over a string of northern islands, as well as regional security issues including North Korea.
The islands are known as the Southern Kurils in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan.
The Soviet Union occupied the four islands at the end of World War Two and the territorial row has weighed on relations between Tokyo and Moscow ever since, precluding a formal peace treaty.
Russia and Japan were part of the six-party talks which included the two Koreas, the United States and China. They have been stalled since 2008 when the North walked away from an aid-for-disarmament deal.
North Korea has called for the resumption of the nuclear talks, but Washington and Seoul have been reluctant to rush back to the table, wary of Pyongyang's potential to engage in protracted negotiations only to walk away from its obligations. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
