- Story Text: The Tokyo High Court on Wednesday (April 11) rejected the final appeal verdict for convicted murderer Tatsuya Ichihashi, sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Lindsay Hawker in 2007.
In a case that horrified Japan and sparked a media frenzy, Ichihashi raped, killed, and then buried the naked body of 22-year-old English teacher Hawker in a sand-filled bathtub in his apartment in 2007.
Ichihashi had been seeking a reduction in his life sentence, claiming that he did not intend to kill Hawker.
Based on evidence that Ichihashi had choked the 22-year-old teacher for three minutes, an earlier district court concluded that Ichihashi had clearly intended to murder.
Ichihashi had said that he had choked Hawker for only a minute and his lawyers argued that he should serve 20 to 30 years for his crimes.
After being on the run for nearly three years and instigating a massive manhunt, he was finally caught by police in 2009 after a tip off by the plastic surgeon who worked onaltering his face to help hide his identity. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
