- Story Text: The sister of Guantanamo detainee Omar Khadr says her family is "overjoyed" that her brother's war crimes charges have been dropped, but she says she expects her brother will be recharged. The sister of Guantanamo captive Omar Khadr says her mother is "overjoyed" over word that all war crimes charges are dropped against him.
U.S. military judges dropped charges on Monday (June 4) against the only two Guantanamo captives facing trial, rulings that could preclude trying any of the 380 prisoners held at the U.S. base in Cuba any time soon.
Khadr's sister, Zaynab, said she's not expecting to see her brother soon. "I think they're going to find another way to recharge him, but at least they found the loop -- a hole in the loop and they're trying something else," Khadr said in Toronto, where the family live.
She also said her brother has matured a lot since his incarceration. "He's doing ok," Khadr said, "a lot more mature than he used to be, I mean he was 15! He's telling us to be strong and he's telling us to hang in there and he's telling us to have faith."
Khadr, a Canadian, was captured in a firefight in Afghanistan five years ago at age 15. Khadr was accused of killing a U.S. soldier with a grenade and wounding another in a battle at a suspected al Qaeda compound in Afghanistan. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
