- Story Text: Chinese families said the MH370 interim report released by an independent investigator on Sunday (March 8) was "meaningless" as they gathered in Malaysia to commemorate one year since the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines passenger jet.
Dozens of family members joined a simple ceremony in the compound of a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur to remember the loved ones who are still missing as state television broadcast the lead investigator announcing the interim report.
"I think the interim report released today is meaningless because the report didn't answer our doubts and it didn't report the truth that we want to know," said the wife of one of the passengers, Liu, who only wanted to be identified by her last name.
"Therefore this report is useless to us. The reason why we're here is because we don't accept the announcement from Malaysia on January 19 that said the event was an incident. I urge them to withdraw the announcement or show us evidence to prove what had happened to the flight," added Liu, whose husband was on board.
"Therefore, this report is useless to us. The reason why we're here is because we don't accept the announcement from Malaysia on January 19 that said the event was an accident. I urge them to withdraw the announcement or show us evidence to prove what had happened to the flight," Liu added.
The report, consisting of more than 500 pages, was posted on Malaysia's Transport Ministry website.
Some Chinese families have come to Malaysia to seek information from authorities.
"We went to visit the authorities a few times but they tried to shrink from responsibility. According to international convention, if it (MH370) crashed we, the family, should be allowed to visit the site. But they didn't allow us to do so," said Zhang, father of one of the passengers.
MH370 vanished from radar screens shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, bound for Beijing, early on March 8, 2014. Investigators believe it was flown thousands of miles off course before eventually crashing into the ocean off Australia.
Australia's deputy prime minister said recently the search for the plane could not go on forever, and discussions were already under way between Australia, China and Malaysia whether to call off the hunt within weeks, or not. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
