- Story Text: The foundation stone for the International Centre for Public Enterprises in Developing Countries headquarters was laid in the Yugoslav city of Ljubljana on Tuesday (2 March).
The ceremony was held during the three day conference of non-aligned and developing countries held in Ljubljana from 2 to 4 March.
The idea of establishing the ICPE was first brought up at a United Nations seminar on public enterprises management held in the Yugoslav city of Herceg Novi in October 1969. Its activities were to be directed towards research, training, consultation, information and documentation for developing countries.
Since then the idea has become a reality and has attracted considerable interest on the international scene. In December 1974 the United Nations development programme confirmed the ICPE as a UN international project and set aside US $121,000 (GBP60,000 sterling) to cover the salaries of international research consultants working on the project. It has also approved a ICPE work programme for 1976 and suggested that the ICPE prepare a medium term programme for its work until 1981.
Construction work on the headquarters in Ljubljana will be carried out in three stages - the first, a six storey office block, to include a library and lecture hall.
The project is being financed by the Yugoslav Federal Executive Council, the Socialist Republic of Slovenia, the Assembly of the City of Ljubljana and a syndicate of Slovenian institutions.
At this week's conference delegates form Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe took part in far reaching talks aimed at securing economic and social advancement for their countries.
