- Story Text: Banker David Kiely has kept his job at Macquarie after he was exposed on live television looking at pictures of a scantily clad Australian model, Miranda Kerr.
Kiely was caught looking at the pictures in the background of a live television cross between Macquarie's Martin Lakos and the Seven Network's Chris Bath as part of a national broadcast in Australia on Tuesday (February 2).
He was clearly seen looking at the pictures on his computer before looking over his shoulder towards the camera, reportedly after reading a footnote in the email which said "look behind you".
Kiely became and overnight online sensation when the vision went viral.
The video triggered an internet campaign to "Save David Kiely" from being fired when a financial website in the United Kingdom called "Here is the City", called for readers to email Macquarie with the subject "Don't fire David Kiely".
Macquarie Group said in a statement on Friday (February 5) that Kiely would "remain an employee of Macquarie" and apologised for "any offence that may have been caused".
The incident has sparked some discussion in Australia as to whether Kiely should keep his job.
One man said he not only believed Kiely was innocent of any wrong-doing, but was also prepared to give him a job.
Chris, who works for men's magazine Zoo, arrived at Macquarie's Sydney headquarters with a pair of scantily clad girls to prove his point.
"We're just trying to give Dave Kiely a job actually, we're realising there's tough times, something as innocent as looking at Miranda Kerr, which we've all done before at work. We'll try and help him out, give him a job where we welcome that type of thing," said Chris, outside Macquarie headquarters.
Another Sydney-sider played down the incident.
"I think it's a real beat-up, I mean he was looking at Miranda Kerr and she had a swim suit on, I mean he should have been working but, no I definitely don't think he should be fired, I think it's just one of those things he probably got it on the computer and had a look at it, she's a beautiful woman," said a woman identified as Judy.
But for one man, looking at pictures of this nature at work was just not an option.
"Not a chance, no way, not then, not now," added another Sydney resident when asked if he would take a peek at his workplace.
Miranda Kerr is the first Australian "supermodel" to model lingerie for Victoria's Secret.
