- Story Text: Fans gathered around the big screens in Times Square, dialing in on their phones to watch and listen to the live performance by American band Train. A chorus of the band's hit single, "Hey, Soul Sister" echoed among the crowd, a song that has been said to bring the band back after a three-year hiatus and a failed album.
The band's drummer Scott Underwood says the band had taken success for granted, so they regrouped and turned their attention back to the music.
"We sort of reset our attitudes and we just started wanting to write music for the love of writing music again instead of just the sole intent of writing a hit song and that's a huge difference," Underwood explains.
"We just love being together again and you know, that's kind of one of our biggest changes."
The San Francisco-based group played "Drops of Jupiter" off their previous album and their two latest singles, "If It's Love" and "Hey, Soul Sister" off their latest album Save Me, San Francisco.
"Hey, Soul Sister" has been featured commercially. The band says they're not opposed to attaching their music to brands.
"We feel like we're the kind of band that a family can love," explains the group's lead singer, Pat Monahan. "We have friends and fans that have loved us for 15 years and new fans that are, you know, they weren't born when 'Meet Virginia' was out, so we just like to keep that in mind when we choose something to link ourselves to."
The band is currently touring with John Mayer. The two musical groups share the same record label, along with many fans.
Despite the media storm in February surrounding Mayer's controversial remarks in a Playboy interview, the band says the 32-year old artist is "authentic."
"My experience with John Mayer is that he's really smart and really talented and very heavily watched and so it's hard to be yourself," says Monahan.
"I think he's aware of some of the things along the way that have made him stumble, but he's a very talented guy."
Train will continue touring with Mayer through August. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
