- Story Text: Triple Crown contender, Big Brown went for his scheduled morning run on Monday (June 2) at the Belmont Racetrack in Elmont, New York.
Big Brown has already won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.
If he wins the Belmont Stakes, he'll become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed won all three races in 1978.
Big Brown's trainer, Rick Dutrow, says he believes it is a foregone conclusion that Big Brown will win the Belmont Stakes on Saturday (June 7).
"We made the first two look kind of easy. I can't image this race turning out any different, but since it's the only one we got left, yeah, it's the toughest one we gotta face."
As Big Brown trains, the champion horse is also recovering from a three-quarter-inch crack in his front, left hoof," Dutrow said.
According to hoof specialist, Ian McKinlay, the slight crack in Big Brown's hoof is healing properly and it may not need to be patched up until Friday (June 6).
"He's moving as good as he's ever moved. I've been reading people saying this thing jeopardizes his life. I think that's absolute nonsense," according to McKinlay. "This is just a slight, slight crack. We're being just as cautious as we can because we are headed for the Triple Crown. If he was my own horse I'd treat him the same way."
The Triple Crown is thoroughbred horse racing's biggest prize. Only eleven horses have won the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
