- Story Text: U.S. Treasury Timothy Geithner said on Tuesday (May 17) Dominique Strauss-Kahn is not in a position to run the International Monetary Fund.
"He's obviously not in a position to run the IMF, and I think it's important the Board of the IMF formally put in place for an interim period somebody to act as Managing Director," Geithner said during an event in New York Tuesday evening.
Geithner is among a growing chorus in the United States who are questioning the viability of Strauss-Kahn's tenure as head of the institution charged with managing the world economy and central to negotiating debt crisis deals.
The U.S. is the IMF's biggest shareholder. John Lipsky, the second in command, is in charge during Strauss-Kahn's absence, but no formal interim chief has been named. IMF sources told Reuters that David Lipton, White House international economic adviser and former deputy treasury secretary, would take Lipsky's deputy position.
"There's a lot going on in the world, a lot going on in Europe in particular, and you want the IMF to have the capacity to be helpful in that context, and I'm very confident they can continue to play a very constructive role," Geithner said.
Strauss-Kahn's arrest has thrown the IMF into turmoil just as it is playing a key role in helping euro zone states like Greece and Portugal tackle debt woes. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
