- Story Text:Samsung Group detained leader Jay Y. Lee, arrived at Seoul central district court on Friday (April 7) for his first trial that is part of a wider investigation into an influence-peddling scandal.
Lee, who didn't attend previous preparatory hearings for his trial on bribery, embezzlement and other charges, is kept well away from other inmates at the Seoul Detention Centre including South Korean former President Park Geun-hye.
Among the charges against Lee are pledging bribes to a company and organizations tied to Park's confidant, Choi Soon-sil, the woman at the centre of the scandal, to cement his control of the smartphones-to-biopharmaceuticals business empire. The funding also included Samsung's sponsorship of the equestrian career of Choi's daughter, prosecutors say.
Lee, tied with white rope, but not wearing prison uniform, appeared at the court, just after Choi arrived for separate trial on the same day. Lee, Choi, and Park have all denied bribery accusations. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
