I think those aspects are still very fluid, so we need to keep an eye on that, meaning we need to know whether they actually contribute to the growth of the U.S. economy. I think that's where it all falls back on." - Story Text: Japan's All Nippon Airways will need to keep an eye on U.S. President Donald Trump's policies to weigh their effects on their airline business, the company's new president Yuji Hirako told Reuters on Thursday (April 6) in an exclusive interview.
Hirako says ANA will keep a sharp eye on how the Trump administration's policies, especially on tax including border taxes, play out, and what effects they have on the U.S. economy.
The U.S. Republican party is pushing a border adjustment tax as a way to boost exports, while Trump has not specifically endorsed the proposal. Trump has also called for a 35-percent border tax on U.S. companies that move jobs abroad and import products back into the U.S. market. It has been unclear in the past if those references referred to the border adjustment proposal.
Trump also signed earlier this year an executive order that temporarily banned travel to the United States by citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and Iraq. After the initial ban was lifted by the courts, Trump signed a new order that took effect on March 16 which keeps a 90-day ban on travel to the U.S by the Muslim-majority countries except Iraq which was dropped from the list.
Hirako also told Reuters ANA has ordered additional Boeing 737s to cover the insufficient number of aircraft due to delayed orders of Mitsubishi Corp's MRJs (Mitsubishi Regional Jets). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
