David Miliband, former British foreign secretary and current president of the International Rescue Committee in New York on Friday (April 7) welcomed a move by the United States to strike a Syrian airbase.
"We have about 1,400 staff working to deliver humanitarian aid inside Syria and share the fury of the president at the outrageous chemical weapons attacks on Tuesday," Miliband said. "The impunity that has existed for appalling war crimes using both chemical weapons and conventional weapons has to be challenged. But the big question for all those who are engaged in military action in Syria is what is their plan to stop the killing and bring a durable peace that can deliver a modicum of hope to the people of Syria?"
The United States fired cruise missiles early on Friday, targeting a Syrian airbase from which U.S. President Donald Trump said a deadly chemical weapons attack had been launched. It was the first direct U.S. assault on the government of Bashar al-Assad in six years of civil war.
At least 70 people, many of them children, were killed in Tuesday's (April 4) attack on Khan Sheikhoun by what US government sources said was sarin gas -- the deadliest chemical attack in Syria since the same nerve agent killed hundreds of people in a rebel-held area near Damascus in 2013. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
