- Story Text: Latest figures show that around 4000 homes are flooded in Shkodra region in north-west Albania with some 10,000 people forced to flee their homes, local media reported on Saturday (December 4).
The evacuation was underway as levels of water in the dams of Drin and Mat River discharged water to decrease the risk of damage.
"Thank God that people survived. As for our house and belongings which we worked for 50 years, it is all gone, this all I can say. It can't get any worst than this, we pray to God for the safety of our family," one woman said.
The Albanian government has declared the Shkodra region a natural disaster and has ordered evacuation of the area. Army and government agencies are struggling to cope with the large amounts of water pouring to this region.
Sewage waters and the oil coming from two flooded gas stations are making the situation even more difficult, forcing the government has asked NATO for assistance. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
