- Story Text: An Israeli man is stabbed and killed by Palestinian at West Bank junction, police say, while Jewish settlers hurl stones at Palestinian homes in a West Bank village.
A Palestinian stabbed and killed an Israeli in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday (February 10), police said.
The Israeli man had stopped in a jeep at an intersection near the West Bank city of Nablus, when he was attacked. The victim was stabbed in the chest and later died of his wounds.
The incident could place more strain on U.S. efforts to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
The soldier, who was in a jeep stopped at an intersection near the West Bank city of Nablus, was stabbed in the chest, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. He later died, a military spokesman added.
Israeli media identified the detainee as a member of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's security forces. Palestinian and Israeli officials could not confirm the report.
Minutes later, in a video distributed by the Israeli Rights Group Betselem, Palestinians documented a handful of Jewish settlers hurling stones and harassing Palestinians in a village nearby the northern West Bank city of Nablus.
The stabbing incident was likely to increase concern in Israel over the effectiveness of U.S.-trained Palestinian security forces loyal to Western-backed President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank.
Security is a key factor in any land-for-peace equation leading to the creation of a Palestinian state.
Abbas, who has balked at returning to talks with Israel until it halts settlement expansion, has demanded it stop its military incursions in the West Bank, in territory designated by interim accords as being under Palestinian control.
Two months ago, in a raid that drew criticism from Abbas's government, Israel responded to a shooting that killed a settler near Nablus by sending soldiers into the city, where they shot dead three militants it alleged were connected to that attack.
The stabbing on Wednesday followed what Palestinians said was the wounding a day earlier of a 17-year-old Palestinian by a settler who shot him near Nablus.
The Israeli military said a settler-guard had fired into the air to disperse stone-throwers and that it was investigating reports a Palestinian was wounded. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
