- Story Text: Violence erupts in the West Bank as U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice wraps up a two day visit to the region.
Violence erupted on Monday (November 5) across the West Bank as U.S Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice wrapped up her two-day visit to the region, aimed at bridging the gap between Israel and the Palestinians ahead of a peace summit in Annapolis.
In the West Bank refugee camp of Balata, near Nablus, an exchange of gunfire erupted when Palestinian security forces attempted to arrest local militants, a senior security official said.
The official added that the shooting started when Palestinian gunmen opened fire in the air. Security forces who arrived on site engaged the gunmen.
At least three Palestinian civilians were injured in the incident.
In the West Bank city of Jenin, Israeli forces conducted an arrest raid igniting clashes with local youth.
Israeli forces patrolled the northern West Bank city in military jeeps, in search for Palestinian militants. At least one member of Islamic Jihad was arrested.
Palestinian youth hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at Israeli forces who responded with teargas and rubber covered metal bullets.
The clashes came as Rice ended two days of talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in the region who are preparing for a Middle East conference to be hosted in the U.S. by the end of the year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
