- Story Text: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon meets Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and attends a signing ceremony to promote environmentally friendly lights in Beijing.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday (July 24) kicked off an official visit to Beijing, holding talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.
Ban, on a four-day visit to China, attended roundtable talks between Chinese Foreign Ministry officials and U.N. delegates at the capital's Diaoyutai State Guest House.
According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ban hopes to use his visit to call on China to continue growth and improve living standards, while following a sustainable path.
The visit comes ahead of a U.N. climate summit in Copenhagen later this year, which aims to reach new agreements to tackle climate change.
Ahead of his meeting with Yang, Ban attended a signing ceremony to promote "green" lights in China, urging the country to take a lead in combating climate change.
"The Green Lights Project" is an initiative between the U.N. and the Chinese government, and is aimed at promoting the use of energy saving lamps.
The project hopes to transform the Chinese lighting products market and phase out the production of sales and production of incandescent lamps, the UNDP said.
Ban is expected to meet with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and President Hu Jintao later on Friday, before travelling to Xian in northwest China's Shaanxi province.
