- Story Text: Israeli troops killed a Palestinian militant during a raid on a village near Jenin despite Israeli assurances it would ease hardships on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah dominated West Bank territories.
Israeli forces killed a Palestinian militant on Monday (July 2) in a West Bank raid, Palestinian witnesses and an Israeli army spokeswoman said.
Friends and relatives gathered outside the local hospital in the northern West Bank city of Jenin where the body of a 25 year old Fatah member was treated.
"We will defend our people until the last drop of blood and last bullet," local Palestinian Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades leader, Zakaria Zbeidi told Reuters Television.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said soldiers had shot the Palestinian during an overnight raid in a refugee camp near Jenin.
Palestinian security sources said the Palestinian gunman was a member of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of the Western-backed Fatah movement.
Citing security concerns, Israel has said it would continue operations against Fatah gunmen in the West Bank.
Salam Fayyad, prime minister in the emergency government that Abbas formed after Hamas Islamists seized control of the Gaza Strip, has said Israeli raids in the West Bank undermine Fatah's intention to disarm gunmen in the occupied territory. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
