- Story Text: Newly-elected World Bank chief Robert Zoellick has arrived in Hanoi for a two-day visit to Vietnam.
Newly-elected World Bank chief Robert Zoellick arrived in Hanoi on Monday (August 6th) at the beginning of a two-day visit to Vietnam.
He met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung after touring some World Bank projects in Yen Bai province, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) northwest of Hanoi, one of the country's poorest areas.
Zoellick, a former United States chief trade negotiator, praised Vietnam for its achievements.
"I have the greatest respect for what you and your colleagues have accomplished," Zoellick told Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung during the meeting.
The Vietnamese Prime Minister thanked the World Bank for its support of the country's poverty reduction program and stressed that a lot of challenges lay ahead and more help would be needed from World Bank.
"Vietnam is a great development story from which many developing countries can learn," Zoellick was quoted as saying before his trip to Vietnam.
Zoellick is to visit Japan after leaving Vietnam on Tuesday (August 7th). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
