- Story Text: Palestinian residents from the West Bank village of Deir Kidees protested against construction work near the settlement of Nili on Wednesday (June 15).
Israeli soldiers used tear gas to disperse the protesters, who attempted to stop a bulldozer from working close to the Palestinian village.
Scores of Palestinians from Deir Kidees, which neighbours the villages of Nilin and Bilin, sat in front of the bulldozer in an attempt to stop it working.
"Since I was born, the area of Deir Kidees has never had land, the east and west is mostly closed. We have no room, most of the families are building (new homes) on top of their houses. There is no land, where is our land? We have this area left and now they are working on it. They stole it for a settlement and now they want to steal more for another settlement and they are pulling us out little by little and they say want to leave the settlements, what are they talking about?" Said an unknown Deir Kidees resident.
Israeli soldiers fired tear gas towards the sitting protesters and later detained at least two of the Palestinian villagers.
Palestinian medical workers reported two Palestinians injured during the clashes, one seriously and one lightly.
The Israeli army said the protesters, including some Israeli peace activists, threw stones at the soldiers. One man was arrested, according to the army. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
