- Story Text: Israeli troops raid West Bank town of Bethlehem, revered as the birthplace of Jesus, despite President Mahmoud Abbas' security force presence.
Israeli forces raided a house in the mostly peaceful West Bank town of Bethlehem on Sunday (October 12).
Bethlehem, revered as the birthplace of Jesus, was part of a U.S.-backed "law and order" campaign in the West Bank, where Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction holds sway, after Fatah lost control of the Gaza Strip to Hamas Islamists in fighting in June.
An Israeli army spokesman confirmed an operation was underway but would not elaborate on the nature of the activity.
Palestinian leaders have urged Israel to halt frequent raids into the West Bank against militants, saying the operations undermine its own attempts to impose security control. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
