Egypt's generals are asserting their command over the country following the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak, preparing on Monday to ban strikes and to warn they will act against "chaos and disorder".
Having suspended the constitution and dissolved parliament on Sunday, moves welcomed by those who saw both institutions as perverted to Mubarak's personal ends, the armed forces council was planning, a military source said, to issue orders intended to stifle further disruption and get the country back to work.
"What the higher military command has reached, to draft a new constitution and to do away with the people's assembly and the parliament, to start a new life with the highest standards of freedom. Egypt has started this and still is moving on the right track calmly and with confidence, this is what the streets want." Hassan al Aydi, an Egyptian resident of Cairo said.
Mubarak's speech on Thursday evening delegated presidential powers to Suleiman, who was seen by the protest movement as Mubarak's man and unacceptable.
After protesters came out in their hundreds of thousands all over Egypt on Friday, Suleiman appeared on television to say in a brief speech that Mubarak had resigned and handed his powers over to the army's Higher Military Council. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
