- Story Text: Jewish settlers clashed with Palestinians after entering their West Bank village on Monday (July 26) and at least six people were hurt in the fistfights and stone-throwing, police said.
The violence followed the demolition by Israeli authorities of a shack that settlers built at an outpost erected without Israeli government approval.
Some settlers in the occupied West Bank have adopted what they term a "price tag" policy of attacking Palestinians whenever the Israeli government moves against unapproved construction in their settlements.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said settlers entered the village of Burin, where clashes with Palestinians ensued. He said four settlers were hurt, one of them seriously, and two Palestinians were injured.
Ahmad Dar Eid, who lives in Burin, said about 70 settlers came into the village and damaged a newly built house. Its owner and his sons scuffled with the Israelis. Other villagers joined the melee before Israeli troops restored order.
There are around 500,000 Jewish settlers living in the West Bank and areas near Jerusalem annexed by Israel.
Major world powers view the settlements as illegal and an obstacle to any Palestinian-Israeli peace deal. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
