- Story Text: United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon arrives in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for an international conference on Iraq and says the country has full UN support. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon arrived in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh on Wednesday (May 2) for an international conference on a five-year plan to reconstruct Iraq.
At the airport Ban told Reuters that Iraq's government and people could count on strong support from the international community.
"The international community should help the Iraqi people and government to restore peace and community and help the socio-economic development. We need to help them so that they can enjoy genuine freedom and security," Ban said.
"It is important for all the countries in the region as well as major powers of the international community to help Iraq. That will help Iraqi government's own efforts to promote national reconciliation. The United Nations is fully committed and ready to assist such Iraqi government efforts," he added.
Ban is in Sharm el-Sheikh for two days of meetings involving Iraq's neighbours and U.N. Security Council permanent members. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
